The Winter’s Tale
Walmer Castle 1990
For the last three summers, a group of leading theatre makers has come to the town of Deal on the Kent coast to create with the local community performances that no-one who saw them will ever forget.
In 1987 the Astor theatre was transformed into a strange and magical world for a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream culminating in a celebratory last night event – Hippolyta’s Wedding – on Deal Pier.
Pericles, Shakespeare’s tale of love and loss, death and reconciliation was told in 1988 as it had been for hundreds of years but in startlingly novel form in the spectacular setting of Deal Castle.
In 1989 the project moved to the magnificent grounds of Walmer Castle for a production of the world’s greatest love story, Romeo and Juliet.
The project returns this summer to Walmer for a production of The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare’s story of bitter jealousy and innocent love, of parting and reunion. In the most beautiful gardens in Kent, against a backdrop of the castle itself, the audience will join the dozens of actors and musicians as they journey from Sicilia to their adventures in Bohamia.
Once again the Deal Theatre Project will prove itself to be on of Britain’s most surprising, inventive and delightful theatrical events.
