Death Kindly Left
[After Emily Dickinson]

Death kindly left the yellow rose
for Summer’s last bouquet,
dark within its silent bud it chose
the colours for its final say –

blending tinted pigments
from its store of chromosomes,
mixing red-veined manila
with deeper colour-chromes,

piercing yellow ochre,
admitting vibrant flame,
with tender undertones
to ease the waiting game –

does Death sit hollow grinning,
programme set –
seeing the sign above my door,
vacant property to let?
