After four years of Shakespeare, it was time for a change. So, in 1991 there were two very different yet complementary productions: at Deal Castle, a play by Shakespeare\u2019s contemporary Christopher Marlowe was staged, Doctor Faustus. On Deal Pier, which had hosted the last night of A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream, a novel processional reimagining of The Tempest took place. Both used all the tropes, conceits and conventions that by now had become familiar every summer in Deal: community casting, amateur and professional actors, spectacular settings and costumes, music, song and dance, and a joyous, celebratory atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
