Luke\u2019s work as a theatre director and performance maker has\nembraced Love and the Revolution<\/em> with\nthe Berliner Ensemble, The Golem<\/em> with\nTheater Brostowska in Prague and Bratislava, Age of the Saints<\/em> in Dublin, the British tour of No\u00ebl\nCoward\u2019s Brief Encounter<\/em>, UK\nproductions of Jonson\u2019s Bartholomew\nFair<\/em> and the musicals Blood\nBrothers<\/em>, Jesus Christ Superstar<\/em> and Oliver<\/em>, Annie Sprinkle and Beth\nStephens\u2019 Blue Wedding<\/em> in\nOxford, A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em> in\nSouth Africa, Sweetness & Light<\/em> in\nLondon and Colchester, A Summer of\nEcosex <\/em>in France and England, and Mulheres de Shakespeare<\/em> in Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In London the devised site specific pieces have included\nSinging the Body Electric<\/em> (Serpentine\nGallery), It\u2019s a Wonderful Life<\/em> (Marylebone\nStation), The Cherry Orchard<\/em> (Conway\nHall), and Chasing the Butterfly<\/em>\n(National Portrait Gallery).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His productions for theatre nomad<\/a><\/strong>, of which he was Artistic Director for 20 years, included all-female versions of Macbeth<\/em> and Hamlet<\/em>, cross-dressed productions of Duke Bluebeard\u2019s Castle<\/em>, A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>, Twelfth Night<\/em> and As You Like It<\/em>, and an erotic celebration of Anita Berber in Triumphant Desire<\/em>. These productions have been seen in China, North America, South Africa, Germany, France, Poland, Russia, Czech and Slovak Republics, Spain and the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n

Luke\u2019s academic and teaching work has included Senior\nLecturer at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University South Africa, Senior\nLecturer at Middlesex University, and Visiting Lecturer at UFRGE (University of\nPorto Alegre) Brazil, Dalhousie University Canada, Institute of American Indian\nArts and the College of Santa Fe in the US. He has led residencies at The Banff\nCentre Canada, run workshops around the world and taught widely in the London\ndrama schools and colleges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internationally known for his innovative performance\nworkshops, Luke was from 2002 to 2009 Artistic Director of the International\nWorkshop Festival bringing leading theatre practitioners from around the world\nto the UK to run workshops, give performances and demonstrations and create\nwork. Highlights included Kwoto, a group of young actors from the Displaced\nPeoples Camps of Khartoum; Falos & Stercus, the Brazilian fetish circus;\nand from Finland, the fire performance collective Flamma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a key member of The Conway Collective<\/a><\/strong> Luke was one of a group of leading performance makers creating and curating work at London’s Conway Hall (2012 \u2013 2018) from live art and spoken word to dance spectaculars. For six years the Collective dared to dream of a better world and produced 68 events and 300 workshops with more than 1,000 artists.<\/p>\n\n\n

Publishes regularly on performance, and was for some years a contributing editor to the journal Performance<\/a><\/em>. Luke\u2019s book, PLAY-ACTING, a guide to theatre workshops<\/em> is published by Methuen in the UK and by Routledge in the US and is a widely used text in drama schools. His four best-selling Good Audition Guides to Shakespeare<\/em> are published by Nick Hern Books, and his Creating Solo Performance<\/em> (with Sean Bruno) is published by Routledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luke\u2019s Doctorate is in The\nPerformance of Gender<\/em>. Current practice and research interests include the\nperformer\u2019s relationship with space, eroticism and performance, and the\npsychology of acting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luke is currently working international performance collective The Sharing, and creating eco-activist environmental performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
