The success of The Dream created an enthusiasm for a second production the following year. From Shakespeare’s best-known play, the team moved on to his least known. Pericles is a story of the sea. The production was imbued with the same ethos and philosophy that had made The Dream such a success. The entire town was invited to take part and many did. The audience were instructed to assemble on the beach to witness Prince Pericles with all the cast, emerge from the waves and join him in procession to the nearby Deal Castle where his adventures around the Mediterranean were enacted. The production made full use of the many opportunities afforded by the castle and established a style of site-specific theatre that would influence the subsequent years of the Theatre Project and as well as theatre practice far and wide.
