• DOCTOR FAUSTUS & A TEMPEST 1991

After four years of Shakespeare, it was time for a change. So, in 1991 there were two very different yet complementary productions: At Deal Castle, a play by Shakespeare’s contemporary Christopher Marlowe was staged: Doctor Faustus.  And on Deal Pier, which had hosted the last night of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a novel processional reimagining of The Tempest took place. Both used all the tropes, conceits and conventions that by now had become familiar every summer in Deal: community casting, amateur and professional actors, spectacular settings and costumes, music, song and dance, and a joyous, celebratory atmosphere.
